Dearest friends and artsy lovers,
This World Fair is a subject I've been fascinated for years and so excited to officially embark a new series of paintings to show with the Treasure Island Museum's forthcoming events.
Coming up this Saturday, February 15th, the Golden Gate International Exposition celebrates the 75th anniversary of the fair at Treasure Island!
Join a festive celebration of the Golden Gate International Exposition’s Diamond Jubilee with personal memories from those that attended the fair, including special guest, Richard Reinhardt. They'll have stories, exhibits, and a place to display memorabilia. If you missed the fair, meet the people who created and experienced it.
The Golden Gate International Exposition, was a phantasmagoria of architectural beauty that would open in 1939. The fair’s purpose was to promote peace and international cooperation; it was also a celebration of San Francisco: the building of two new bridges launched the city’s role as the "gateway to the Pacific.” The breathtaking buildings, dramatically and inventively lit at night in glowing colors – embraced a variety of architectural styles: Art deco, Bauhaus, Romanesque. The theme of the fair was Pacific unity, sharing styles from all four continents with the Pacific coasts. As the war in Europe heated up, various participating countries had to close their exhibits. It became evident that Magic City could not be sustained. The fair closed on September 29th, 1940. The U.S. Navy set up a base on Treasure Island. All of the buildings were destroyed except for the Administration Building, which housed Treasure Island Museum until the mid 1990’s. The Treasure Island Museum Association is engaged in the initial phases of planning the new museum. During this transition, the Museum has been organizing special events and lectures about Treasure Island and about the fair held monthly at their site.
I am beyond thrilled for this terrific opportunity to attend "Happy 75th, GGIE" this Saturday, and showcase my paintings "Tribute to Pacifica" and "Magic City" for this exhibit.

Tribute to Pacifica, start to finish, 20" x 16", oil on canvas, by Patricia Araujo, 2014
The program begins with live music by the Aurora Mandolin Orchestra at 10:00am. Although the personnel has changed, the AMO performed at the GGIE, and we are very proud to have them play for us. Storytelling with Marie Giannini, Claire Isaacs Wahrhaftig, Richard Reinhardt, and guest host Desmond Thorsson will begin at 10:30, followed by an opportunity for other guests to share their GGIE memories.
Other special guests include painter Patricia Araujo, whose architectural paintings have been inspired by GGIE images. One of Dudley Carter’s original wood panels will be on display. We will also have special tables set aside where you can display your GGIE memorabilia, if you wish, as well as items from the Treasure Island Museum collection. Richard Reinhardt will sign copies of his book Treasure Island 1939-1940: the Exposition Years. Bring your own copy, or purchase a gently used copy of the book, which is now out of print.
All our lectures are free.
We look forward to seeing you Saturday!
